Located in Leavitt, AB and owned & operated by Robert and Heather Schmitke, Rafter Lazy S Ranch has been building a herd of top-EPD purebred Black Angus cattle since 2009. Purebred Black Angus became a passion for Robert when our family left Alberta and went to work for Buck Lake Ranch in Beaverdell, BC. The owner, Wayne Fipke instilled his extensive knowledge of quality purebred cattle based on excellent genetics in Robert. In the time Robert and Wayne were running Buck Lake, many quality cattle were purchased from Basin Angus and Stevenson Angus in Montana, as well as from Peak Dot Angus in Saskatchewan.
The Schmitke family returned to Alberta in 2008, purchased the ranch in Leavitt in 2009 and began building their Black Angus herd. Cattle were purchased from Buck Lake, Sandy Creek Angus, and Willabar Angus. Significant investment has gone towards AI ing to quality bulls from top stock in Canada and the United States.
Each year we love watching the purebreds, and waiting with anticipation for their calves. The animals are strong and healthy, which is evident in their performance.
In addition, Buddy (our male Border Collie) was purchased from Broken Circle Border Collies in August 2011, and our female, Cinder, was acquired from the Red Bluff Stock Dog sale in 2018. In all reality the ranch should be named after the dogs, as they are the ones that keep the wheels on the tractor.
